When people mention sustainability in construction, one of the first things that come to mind is new construction using the newest technologies or recycled material to reduce waste of valuable resources.

However, restoration of current buildings should be considered as an act of sustainability as well. In fact you could say that restoration of existing building should be considered as the origin of sustainability.

Restoration promotes sustainability by:

1. Reducing the amount of waste going into landfills.
2. Sustaining the great buildings within our cities creating a sense of place and the sustaining our sense of community.
3. Unlike new development, dollars spent on restoration projects tend to stay within the local community creating economic opportunity and jobs for local economies.
4. Restoration increases local property values.
Restoration can also reduce resource use in existing structures preserving our environment and reducing pollution.
